Island Spiced Burgers

My weekend plans were screwed by tropical storm Rafael.  I’m supposed to be on the beach, but instead it’s pissing it down outside.  Now what?  I decided to stay in and make some spicy island cuisine.  I had a craving for a good burger and Jamaican food, this burger was the love child of those cravings.  It’s pretty easy to make, as long as you have all the seasonings.  This will yield 2 half pound burgers.

1 Pound Ground Beef (not too lean)

Spice Paste:

1 Tsp Orange Juice

Juice of 1/2 lime

1 Tsp Rum

1 Tsp White Vinegar

2 Whole Cloves

1 Clove Garlic

6 Black Peppercorns

6 Allspice Berries

1 Habanero

1 Green Onion

1 Bay Leaf

1 Inch Fresh ginger

1/2 Stick Cinnamon

Grind the dry spices, add vinegar, lime juice, orange juice, rum, oil, garlic, green onion, ginger and blend to a paste.  Reserve one Tsp of the paste, add the rest to ground beef and mix in a bowl (if using your hands use gloves unless you want to be reminded of the habanero later!).  Fry up the burgers in a skillet (or on the grill).  Serve with spiced ketchup (add the reserved paste to 1/4 cup ketchup) and desired toppings.  Mmm, that is a tasty burger!
